I am a concerned citizen when it comes to Buellton’s future. I have interviewed both candidates running for mayor—these are my observations.

Elysia Lewis came into Buellton’s political arena just two years ago and is running for mayor while she still has two years to serve on the City Council. She feels she is better situated than her opponent to diversify the representation in our city’s government. My main concern regarding Mrs. Lewis is that she may only see the mayor’s office as a way to increase her territorial jurisdiction. Mrs. Lewis has been endorsed by Supervisor Joan Hartmann and Dr. James Powell—neither of whom live in Buellton. It is my opinion that Mrs. Lewis and her nonlocal political backers are planning to use Buellton’s mayoral office as a stepping stone on the way to replacing Supervisor Hartmann. I understand the desire to seek higher office. But personally, I want a mayor who is dedicated only to Buellton’s future.

My second concern is as Mrs. Lewis stated at the candidates forum—she has four kids and a full-time job and may not have time to go the the League of Cities training for mayors and council members.

David King has lived in Buellton for 18 years. He has served in the U.S. military with honors. Mr. King understands the importance of preserving the health and well-being of individuals. He was with the CHP for 25 years and wants our town to be kept safe. In 2008 Mr. King watched a major development go up in town and was unhappy with what he saw. Instead of just complaining, King ran for City Council, won, and became part of the process. Mr. King is now vice mayor and has the needed experience to make an excellent mayor. He has served on numerous boards [and] commissions. Mr. King has no desire to achieve a higher office. He is retired and can spend the necessary time to enrich Buellton’s community.

Please vote for Dave King for mayor—I am!
