Midland School is no stranger to fire. Located on Figueroa Mountain Road in Los Olivos, the boarding high school holds regular fire drills and had a prescribed burn on campus just last fall. Its nearly 3,000 acres are home to year-round faculty members, 80 students, and dozens of animals. Before the rural school received mandatory evacuation orders as the Lake Fire grew, officials began retrieving valuables and relocating animals. Midland is now home to fire teams working to stop the 38,000-acre fire’s spread. Staff Writer Taylor O’Connor speaks with Midland faculty and staff and rounds up the latest stats on the Lake Fire [6].
This week, you can also read about who’s gearing up for the Santa Maria City Council race [4]; artwork depicting pillars of our society [22]; and the festival that celebrates Sta. Rita Hills wineries [25].
